Jacksonville, Florida (NASDAQ-LSTR) Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first non-asset based provider of transportation capacity, has named Shirley Anhalt 2005 Landstar Safety Officer of the Year.
Anhalt, an independent Landstar sales agent who operates her transportation agency in Stoneboro , Pennsylvania , was honored for her commitment to the company's safety program and for taking a pro-active, safety-first approach with customers and business capacity owners (BCOs). The term BCO refers to the independent small business owners who operate and supply Landstar with the equipment used to haul freight.
"I was shocked and thrilled to receive the award,” said Anhalt. "It was something I couldn't believe considering the outstanding Landstar agents who were also in the running. The recognition is just starting to sink in.”
Landstar's extensive outreach safety effort includes employees, BCOs and BCO fleet drivers, agents, customers and the public at large. In addition to education, awareness and training programs, the company hosts a nationwide Safety Thursday conference call each month and promotes Mutual Understanding of Safety Together (M.U.S.T.) – a unique program that brings shippers together with Landstar representatives to build safer working environments at loading docks and other shipper facilities.
In addition to being recognized for her safety efforts with BCOs, Anhalt's award recognizes her safety efforts with one of her customers, the Joy Cone Company, Landstar's 2005 MUST Customer of the Year and the world's largest maker of ice cream cones.
Candidates for Landstar Safety Officer of the Year (LSO) are required to actively support all safety, security and compliance programs and initiatives on a consistent basis. In addition to working in tandem with the LSO Region Council, they must participate regularly in Landstar's Safety Thursday and loss prevention programs.
"Every week Shirley's agency dispatches between 20 to 25 loads for Joy Cone,” said Landstar President and CEO Henry Gerkens. "Our BCOs deliver loads and return home safely due, in part, to Shirley's efforts. Earning the title of LSO of the Year certainly singles her out from among her peers. It says loudly and clearly that Shirley makes a difference."
Anhalt believes one key to safety is communication. It's something she makes a commitment to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "Trucks don't operate under an 8-to-5 schedule,” says Anhalt. "The safety on any one load starts whenever the customer tenders it to us. A problem could occur anytime, day or night, and I want that phone call if a customer or BCO needs help.”
Anhalt says Landstar's safety-first culture enables her to safely dispatch BCOs knowing they have traveled many miles and arrived at their destination safe and sound.
"As an agency, part of our role is not only to help BCOs make a living, but to make sure the load is dispatched safely,” says Anhalt, who opened her agency in 1999. "The next time a BCO calls to get a load, it's a real good feeling to know everything went well.”
